The Goulburn Valley Football Umpires Association has named an unchanged selection of field umpires from last year's Goulburn Valley League grand final, with Andrew Moore, Steve Williams and Simon Walsh to call the shots.
Moore brings the bulk of the experience having umpired 363 games and 12 senior grand finals, but Williams (244 games and eight grand finals) and Walsh (127 games and four grand finals) also know what they are talking about.
Barry McCrae will goal umpire his sixth senior GVL decider with Charlie Zampaglione to wave the flags in his third, with teenagers Lachlan Wright, Ashlee Ball, Tom Janke and Will Mitchell to roam the boundaries.
While Williams acknowledged it brought pressure, he said being picked for the big dance was an honour.
“It's what we all want to get at the start of the year being the top grand final. Even though it's my sixth (GVL grand final), it's still pretty special,” he said.
“You don't want to mess it up is the problem, you want to make sure you get everything right, and you keep on top of it.
“You want to prepare well because you want to be on top of it all day, especially if it comes down to late in the game, you still want to be running on top of the ground and not fatigued so you get those decisions right.”
AFL Goulburn Murray's regional umpiring director Cruze O'Shea said the umpires picked had well and truly earned the nod.
“These guys are the pinnacle of our group and what we expect our umpires are striving to get to,” he said.
“Whether it be their training, their knowledge of the laws, their dedication to umpiring and all the extra stuff they do one the track, this is reward for these guys and I've got no doubt they'll do a fantastic job on Sunday.”
With boundary umpires Janke, Ball and Mitchell on debut, O'Shea knew the trio was ready for the big time.
“These guys have only been in our system for three to four years, they all did their first senior grand final last year whether it was the Murray league or the KDL,” he said.
“Again, they've impressed and come along in strides from where they were last year.”
