Young Swans made to take the long route after loss to Lancaster

By Meg Saultry

Avenel’s under-13 netball squad may have lost its semi-final clash with Lancaster, but it will have a chance at redemption when it faces rival Nagambie at Dookie Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

The Swans finished the season in second place - a win behind the Wombats - which meant the two top teams came to blows in the first semi-final for a shot to progress straight through to the grand final.

Their recent record stood at 1-1 after the Wombats got the points in the season opener with a commanding 37-3 win, before the Swans evened the score in round 12, beating the Wombats 10-8.

But Avenel couldn’t get over the top of a well-drilled Wombats outfit in its first final, going down by 23 goals at Nagambie Recreation Reserve on Saturday morning.

Avenel will now look to topple Nagambie in a preliminary final this Saturday, with the hope of then going on to avenge Saturday’s loss to Lancaster in the big one.

The Swans should go in to its clash with Nagambie full of confidence after beating the Lakers earlier in the season, 30-14.
