A record 148 greyhounds were adopted at the Greyhound Adoption Program’s three-day adoption event in Seymour.

The adoption event was held earlier this month and easily surpassed the 110 adopted at last year’s similar event.
And the 81 greyhounds rehomed on January 17 set a record for the most greyhounds adopted in a single day in any Australian state.
Nearly 600 people visited during the three days to check out the de-sexed and vaccinated greyhounds looking for their forever homes.
Among them was Sharon Fitzpatrick from Wallan who took home Rosey on the Saturday after doing some research on the breed.
“They are really loving dogs and very quiet and rarely bark. And they are easy to maintain which really suits my lifestyle,” Ms Fitzpatrick said.
“I was also very impressed by how helpful everyone at GAP was on the day and how easy it was to find and adopt Rosey who is just so friendly and very much at home now.”
Victoria’s Greyhound adoption Program (GAP), run by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), is one of the world’s largest greyhound rehoming agencies, finding homes for almost 9500 retired racers since it was established in 1996.
GRV chief executive Alan Clayton said last year’s record of 110 was something that he thought the GAP could match, but was amazed by the response this year.
“Our thanks go out to the public who have embraced our dogs and our program and given them wonderful new homes,” Mr Clayton said.
“Our special foster carers who helped get the dogs ready for adoption, all the volunteers throughout the event and our GAP staff all worked very hard and the results speak for themselves.
“This record number of adoptions shows the growing love affair the Victorian public has with the greyhound breed.
“The secret is out about these wonderful, gentle, intelligent and graceful dogs and there are now thousands of greyhounds in homes and apartments right across the state.”
