Representatives from Goulburn-Murray Water and Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority will be on hand to answer any questions about the Guilfus Congupna Catchment Drainage Course Declaration and related issues.
Goulburn Broken CMA irrigation manager Carl Walters said improving surface water drainage in the area had been identified as priority in the Shepparton Irrigation Region Drainage Strategy.
“We are now at the stage where we can take action to address some of the issues in the Guilfus Congupna area, thanks to funding from the Victorian Government,” Mr Walters said.
“The community has been consulted in the past about the drainage proposal, which has been designed to address long-standing drainage issues.”
Poor natural drainage, obstructions to flow, water management, a rising watertable and threats to significant wetlands were identified by the community as some of the main risks to the area’s agricultural land, environmental values and road infrastructure.
Mr Walters said the proposed works also involved restoring natural flows to some important local wetlands.
“This is crucial because the flatness of the land in that area means there are significant obstructions to natural flows which can lead to broad-scale flooding,” he said.
“The information session will be an opportunity to outline the final plan and seek community feedback.”
People are invited to attend the drop-in information session at the Congupna Community Centre between 10 am and noon on Thursday, January 30 to discuss the new Drainage Course Declaration proposal and how it aims to improve drainage in their area.
