His grandfather was brought up in Echuca and his father now lives there and, after growing up in Melbourne himself, Chris and his wife, Tina, decided the country life was for them.
He says getting off Melbourne's beaten track to take things off-road in Rochester by starting a four-wheel drive and auto mechanics is as satisfying as it is frightening.
"It's scary but good starting a business in Rochester," Mr West said.
"I want to be a busy and honest mechanic and to do a good job. I want to provide a service the people of Rochester can trust."
He officially opened his workshop doors on Friday, August 23 and hopes his business will grow into a trusted and successful service to his community — and to service the area's love of 4WDs.
But it is not just starting a business that is new for this mechanic of 19 years, he has also been a father for six weeks now.
Westy's auto & 4WD provides services, repairs, upgrades and modifications from Shed 2/22 Ramsay St and can be contacted on Facebook, Instagram or by phone on 0402 343 409.
