The four-time Kyabram premiership ruckman had committed to play with Girgarre this year in a one-off one-year deal. but is now officially retired.
‘‘Yes I’ve played my last game. I’ve hung up the boots for good,’’ Reeves said at the weekend.
‘‘I had played some junior football at Girgarre and I was going to give them one year, but of course that didn’t happen because of COVID-19.’’
A combination of work, family life and a battle against a persistent knee injury have forced the popular big man into retirement.
Reeves played in five grand finals with Kyabram and has been a key player in its past four premiership sides — under Dave Williams in 2013 and Paul Newman in 2016, 2017 and 2019.
He was playing with Torquay in the Bellarine Football League when the Bombers lost the 2018 grand final to Shepparton.
He played in his first senior GVL grand final as a 17-year-old with Kyabram in 2010 when the Williams-coached Bombers were beaten by Mansfield, the year after he was a member of the Bombers’ under-18 premiership side coached by Stan Varoce.
Although only 27 now, Reeves has been battling knee problems since his junior days which limited the amount of games he played in recent seasons.
Reeves won a reputation for saving some of his best games for season-deciders.
He won two Wilf Cox medals, judged by former GVL players; an AFL umpires award, selected by the officiating umpires on the day; and a player of the finals series award throughout Kyabram’s four premiership wins.
‘‘I have had a good innings and have enjoyed my career but it’s time. I won’t be playing again,’’ Reeves said.
Reeves married earlier this year and he and his wife Ellie are expecting their first child in January.
He lives in Geelong and is the Australia-wide manager for a construction firm, Fulton-Holden.
Reeves is one of two key players who will be missing from Kyabram’s 2019 premiership line-up from last season.
Utility star and four-time Kyabram premiership Tom Holman announced last week he is joining Heathcote District Football League Lockington-Bamawn United next year.
