Declining water levels in Greens Lake at Corop are putting fish at risk, meaning Goulburn-Murray Water will relocate native fish to other parts of the region.
With water levels below 15 per cent, there are concerns the fish may not survive if it dips further.
The process of relocating fish started on Wednesday, March 2, according to G-MW water resources manager Mark Bailey.
“Lake conditions turning to the point of being dangerous to fish health is rapidly approaching so we needed to do something,” he said.
“We are liaising with the local angling clubs and campers to ensure they are aware of what we are doing.”
G-MW is working with the Department of Environment, Land and Water and Planning, the Victorian Fisheries’ Authority and the Taungurung Land and Water Council to relocate the fish to other waterways.
“We anticipate finding golden perch, which will be relocated to Waranga Basin, and Murray cod, which will be released to the Goulburn River,” Mr Bailey said.
“If there are good specimens, the VFA is keen to use some at the new Arcadia fish hatchery as brood stock.
“We expect fish to be predominately carp and they will be disposed of accordingly.”
