But one thing connects them all: kidney disease, and its often debilitating impacts.
The GV Kidney Support Group was established 21 years ago as a place of connection, community and education for individuals or family members touched by kidney problems.
The only support group of its kind in Victoria, it has since grown in membership and reach, providing a space of comfort and a meal.
Judy James has been with the group for 20 years, and had her kidney transplant 19 years ago.
She said while the founding member had since passed away, the group had given her enormous support over two decades.
“We just listen to one another, and just support one another if they feel down or they need to talk,” she said.
Nora McCarthy joined almost 19 years ago, and said it wasn't just a place for men or women who had undergone transplants.
“Others come here wanting to know symptoms of kidney problems, because their husband or wife have it — and they want to know what we experience, to understand,” she said.
“Some have transplants, some are on dialysis, some have kidney problems but don't need dialysis and others have donated their kidneys to their family members.”
Every month, the members head to the GV Hotel, with occasional speeches from doctors and nurses.
Judy Bryant first had kidney problems five years ago, and felt lost in her diagnosis.
“Doctors tend to talk in jargon,” she said.
“I didn't know what they were talking about, I really didn't . . . I didn't understand what it was all about and what had to happen.”
Then, someone let her know about a support group, and suggested she attend alongside her husband.
“We came the first time knowing no-one, and people were so helpful,” she said.
“They explained things in a way we could understand because they weren't talking jargon.”
