SAM's Collector Roadshow hosted three valuation experts from Melbourne auction house Leonard Joel, who provided insight and guidance for community collections.
People brought everything from paintings, sewing machines, ice skates and vases to precious watches and gems to the tables, waiting with bated breath for an expert valuation.
Caroline Tucker, head of the valuations department at Leonard Joel, inspected jewellery on the day and said she had seen many amazing pieces.
“One was an early Australian necklace, dating back to 1880, which was of museum quality,” Ms Tucker said.
“The links were really unusual, each handcrafted and hand-carved with an acanthus leaf, which is a typical Victorian motif used in jewellery.
“Another person brought in a beautiful Omega diamond wristwatch, plus there was a stunning emerald brooch.
“I've been really surprised by what's come in today already.
“Above all, I love hearing the stories and helping to bring context to an item.
“Being able to tell people more about a treasured possession is just beautiful.”
Organisers said they were overwhelmed with the interest in the inaugural roadshow.
And while they are making no promises, there are hopes the roadshow could become an annual event.
