A Shepparton-based nurse was one of just four Australian College of Nursing scholarship recipients for this year’s Jon Baines Tour to South Africa.

Janette Webster successfully received a scholarship to attend the nursing tour in June and July this year with 22 other attendees.

She said she found out she was one of the selected recipients in December and would be among amazing company.

“I feel very blessed,” she said.

Ms Webster explained she completed the application process which required her to meet certain criteria including how she planned to share her knowledge gained on the tour with her own community.

She thanked her professional coach Veronica Croome for assisting with the application process.

After working as a nurse at Goulburn Valley Health for the past 30 years, Ms Webster said she had been extremely blessed to have many opportunities for professional development during that time.

“Now my kids have grown up and I want to spread my professional wings (even further),” she said.

Ms Webster said she was most looking forward to spending time with like-minded individuals while also being immersed in South African culture.

She said she also looked forward to spending time with ACN chief executive Kylie Ward, who had worked to raised the profile of nurses at both a national and international level.

“She’s an incredible woman,” Ms Webster said.

She said the tour comprised a mixture of sight-seeing and touring with hospital visits also included and much more.

“It will be very interesting to see how they run health services,” she said.

“It really is an opportunity of a lifetime.”
