The wet weather failed to dampen the spirits of members of the Shepparton Greek Orthodox community on Monday as dozens of locals gathered for the annual blessing of the waters.

Huddled under umbrellas beside Aquamoves’ outdoor pool, a large group of community members watched on to see who would be first to recover a golden cross after it was thrown into the water by a priest.
The ritual is celebrated around the world every year on January 6, marking an important occasion on the Greek Orthodox calendar.
Shepparton Greek Orthodox priest Father Platon Derlis said the event blessed not only all water sources such as rivers and seas but also brought good fortune to the person who collected the cross.
“The ceremony helps people live a better life and helps clean their sins,” Father Derlis said.
“It's great to see so many people come here.”
This year Zac Paraskevas was first to the cross.
The ceremony, part of the Holy Epiphany, recognises the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by John the Baptist.
