Heartbeat Victoria Goulburn Valley Branch and Shepparton & District Parkinson’s Support Group will be given $4656 each, as part of the Health Condition Support Grants program.
The grants will assist the peer-led support groups with administrative and operational costs over a two-year period.
“Chronic illness can be a lonely, frustrating and distressing time for sufferers — especially those in regional and rural areas — however, social interactions play a vital part in wellbeing and health outcomes where people can achieve empowerment, control and hope, thereby enjoying a better quality of life,” Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp said.
“Studies show that people involved in peer-led support groups better manage their chronic condition and have better health and wellbeing outcomes than those that rely solely on medical interventions.
“Peer-led support groups can make a real difference for local people learning to cope after being diagnosed with a chronic illness.
“It’s a great chance to make friends, talk and share experiences with peers who are enjoying full and independent lives while living with a chronic illness.”
