Vital mental health tips at Mental Health Month expo

To coincide with Mental Health Day, Wellways will host an expo providing community members with a wide range of health information and activities.

The Mental Health Month Expo will focus on whole health with access to interactive and informative stalls, guest speakers, sensory and relaxation activities and carer-specific activities.

“There will be a live performance by the award-winning Listening To Voices theatre group from Wangaratta Gateway Health who share lived experiences of hearing voices, and they do their performance in a skit-type format,” Wellways senior program worker Lauren Shadbolt said.

Guest speakers will include Shepparton’s Uncle Lance James and representatives from Beyond Blue the Stroke Foundation.

“The Marrung Dance Group from Mooroopna Secondary College will be performing alongside Uncle Lance James for the welcome to country ceremony,” Ms Shadbolt said.

Wellways will also launch its latest campaign, Stampede Stigma.

“It’s a campaign that stands to address the statistics of stigma and discrimination associated with three out of four people affected by mental health,” Wellways youth residential co-ordinator Gemma Merchant said.

“On the day we encourage people to come and get a photo with our mascot, Daz, the zebra, hashtag it and share it on social media to spread the word.”

The Mental Health Month Expo will be held on Thursday, October 10 from noon to 5.30pm at Shepparton Sports Stadium, 120 Numurkah Rd, Shepparton.
