Kyabram man wins gold at National Croquet Championships

KYABRAM’S Trevor Bassett made his community proud by taking the top prize at the National Croquet Championships in Melbourne recently.

Bassett and doubles partner Jenny Clarke, with whom he won the Australian Open Doubles Championship in 2018, faced down fierce competition right from the get-go but managed to pull through in spectacular fashion.

After getting through day one unscathed, the pair dropped the first two games of day two, which threatened to send them home early.

Bassett and Clarke responded in their final block game to progress to a playoff match, which they then won against a team who bested them earlier in the day.

After scraping through their best-of-three semi-final by the skin of their teeth, the dynamic duo fought back against their higher seeded opponents in the final and took out the championship.

And after a gruelling 15 hours of competition on the final day, it is safe to say Trevor Bassett and Jenny Clarke earned their place on the top of the podium.

Trevor said he and Jenny were looking forward to going for the three-peat in 2020.
