Three goals behind at the final break, Girgarre stunned its opponent with a 10-5 final term.
Impacted by injuries and player unavailability, the Kangaroos held on in the dying stages for an enthralling two-goal win at Merrigum Recreation Reserve.
Saturday’s round 16 result leaves Merrigum sitting sixth on the ladder and tied on 36 points with seventh-placed Shepparton East.
The Bulldogs will claim four points from their final-round bye — taking them to 40 points — which will no doubt add pressure on Louise Richards’ side.
And even though Girgarre will miss finals this season, Kangaroos mentor Chloe Kavanagh was still impressed with her side’s thrilling win.
‘‘I was really proud of the effort from everyone that played,’’ Kavanagh said.
‘‘I thought it was a great team effort, if I could give everyone best, I would’ve.’’
Defensive duo Mel Clarke and Erin Potter played important roles, with their ability to intercept the ball standing out.
Sharpshooters Elise Jones and Jacqui Gahan led the way in attack, while Kylie Battle showcased her versatility with a great game in wing defence.
‘‘Kylie normally plays centre, but we’ve been working around with her playing wing defence recently,’’ Kavanagh said.
‘‘She killed it, she had a great game on their quick attackers.’’
In other results, Stanhope continued its journey towards the minor premiership with a comfortable win against Undera.
Kerrie Gray’s side stormed past the home side 76-34 and remains undefeated with two rounds remaining.
Violet Town clinched its fourth win of the season with a 28-7 victory against Ardmona.
