Symbolic swimming

By Shepparton News

January 7, 1974

Each year on January 6, the Greek Orthodox Church, celebrates the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist.

Yesterday the service was conducted by the Very Reverand T. Kendris and drew a large gathering.

The ceremony started with a church service, but the highlight was at the Raymond West swimming pool

A symbolic gold cross was blessed and thrown in the pool to be retrieved by a group of swimmers.

In the picture above, Reverend Kendridis is pictured blessing the cross before he tossed it into the water.

And in the top picture is Con Grovios (14) from North Altona, the lucky diver that retrieved the cross from the pool this year.

Seven divers tried to find the cross but were beaten to it by Con.

Con received a special blessing.
