August 24, 1972: Big week for St Georges Rd

The last week of the second term was a big week in sport for St Georges Rd Primary School in Shepparton.

The school’s football team made history by becoming premiers and champions in the Shepparton City Primary School Sports Association.

This was the third successive year St Georges Rd has won the double title in the competition.

St Georges Rd won the title by defeating Bourchier St in the grand final. Scores were St Georges Rd 7.9 (51) d Bourchier St 3.4 (22).

The school’s Year 3 and 4 team also had a win.

They took out the lightning premiership conducted among district primary schools. But the wins were not restricted to football.

St Georges Rd’s A-grade netball won the interschool competition by comfortably defeating Gowrie St.

In the Saturday morning netball competition, St Georges Rd was well to the fore.

The school had four teams in the competition and three of them made the grand finals.

Teams representing Year 5 and 6 won the premiership, while the Year 5B team was beaten by one goal in another grand final.

The wins were a triumph for two teachers at the school. Brendan Tinkler coached the senior football side and his wife Sue had charge of netball.
