The council was allocated a further $1 million for infrastructure projects that stimulate employment and spending under the Drought Communities Programme – Extension program.
Director corporate services Matt Hansen said the six projects on the wish list are a combination of community and council submissions.
They were agreed to by councillors at the December council meeting, and have a combined total value of less than the $1 million allocated.
Mr Hansen said there is scope for further projects to be considered, or alternatives to council’s recommendations.
‘‘I know that everyone is quite busy in January or away for the holidays, but the council is hoping people can come up with alternative suggestions,’’ Mr Hansen said.
‘‘Projects will have to meet the criteria of using local resources and have a long lasting effect on the area.
‘‘The council has to be the one to submit the request for the projects, but we are open to considering any plans.
‘‘We will accept submissions from the public until 5pm Wednesday, February 12, 2020.’’Projects must be able to be completed by December 1, 2020 to be eligible for the funding.
The six proposed projects so far are:
- Finley Golf Club – $200,000 for irrigation improvements to provide a modern, water efficient system for nine holes.
- Finley CBD – $100,to subsidise repainting of shopfronts to rejuvenate the CBD. Up to 25 businesses could benefit from the project.
- Berrigan Community Golf and Bowls Club – $60,000 to replace its ageing manual sprinkler system with an automated system for the bowling greens.
- Berrigan CBD – $100,000 for a streetscape rejuvenation, including replacement and renewal of signs and street furniture, and installation of new garden beds and shade structures.
- Tocumwal Historic Aerodrome Museum – $400,000 to construct a museum to house a collection of World War II memorabilia relating to RAAF base at Tocumwal.
- Barooga Landscape Plan – $100,000 to continue Barooga Adventure Park works started in 2018, which included the installation of a splash park opened in October this year.
Projects funded under the original $1 million in drought funding provided to the council have been ongoing.
These projects include an extension of Scoullar St in Finley and associated pedestrian access; redevelopment of the Finley War Memorial Swimming Pool and car park; redevelopment of Apex park in Berrigan; and the redevelopment of Hayes park in Berrigan.
