From 2023, the Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major has been proposed to replace the Intermediate and Senior VCAL, and the Victorian Pathways Certificate is set to replace the Foundation VCAL.
Vocational Major students will have more workplace experience opportunities along with a more targeted curriculum to suit their career goals, and students studying the Victorian Pathways course will focus on preparing them for the workforce or future study.
Education Minister James Merlino said the education reforms were designed to give high school students more opportunities tailored to their goals.
“We’re excited to introduce these new vocational certificates, offering young people the best chance to pursue their goals and to develop well-rounded skills to succeed in further education, work and life,” he said.
The new courses were developed with input from students, employers, and educators, which will continue as the certificates are introduced.
Mr Merlino said the new certificates would provide greater opportunities to all students as they finished secondary school.
“These reformed mean students will have better support and flexibility to study what they want,” he said.
“Alongside key academic skills that will prepare them for the jobs of the future.”
The certificate framework will now be submitted to the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority to begin the accreditation process.
