THE career of cricket prodigy Todd Murphy has taken another huge step forward.
Already an under age state and national rep, Murphy can now add representing Victoria's second XI to his growing list of accolades.
The young all-rounder made his debut in Victoria's clash with South Australia on November 4, named at number 10 in a side including Will Sutherland and Jake Fraser-McGurk, who will both make their Sheffield Shield debuts for Victoria this week.
For Murphy, the news of his selection had come a week before the match began.
“I got a call from one of the selectors telling me I was going to be a part of the side,” he said.
“It's obviously an exciting moment to be told you're going to get the opportunity, and fortunately they gave me the call well in advance so it gave me a bit of time to process the excitement and prepare myself for the actual game.”
Murphy was rewarded for a strong start to the Victorian Premier League season, where he is averaging 48 with the bat and has 11 wickets to his name with club St Kilda.
And his debut at the next level did not disappoint, with figures of 2/73 off 28 overs at an economy rate of 2.6.
He also made 14 runs, including being unbeaten on nine at the end of Victoria's first innings.
“I was really happy with my performance,” he said.
“Going into the game you don't really know what to expect, you've taken a step up in terms of quality and I could notice that change straight away. It's an adjustment, and I was happy with how I adjusted.
“I was pretty happy with my bowling in particular, being able to claim a couple of wickets was a really special moment.”
While Victoria has selected two young guns in Sutherland and McGurk for this week's Shield match with Queensland, Murphy isn't looking at that horizon quite yet.
“Obviously it's something I'd love to do one day,” he said.
“But I also haven't thought about it. To me, it isn't something that is realistic quite yet. I still have a lot of development as a player and know a number of things that I am able to improve on.
“Getting included in this side is a showing that I am on the right path, but I still have a bit of work to do. Hopefully I can continue to get better and push for that opportunity in the future.”
