Pin pulled on junior Rams

By Jamie Lowe

The Deniliquin Rams Murray Football Netball League junior teams will not play in 2020.

The closure of the NSW/Victorian border forced the club into a tough situation, with nine of the 14 MFNL clubs located in Victoria.

The club announced its decision to pull the pin on the MFNL season on Wednesday afternoon through an official statement from the general committee.

‘‘After ongoing discussions with the general committee, netball sub-committee, coaches and team managers, we have come to the decision to withdraw Deni Rams Junior Football and Netball teams from the potential 2020 Murray Football Netball League season,’’ the statement read.

‘‘We would like to thank the Murray Football Netball League executive committee for the ongoing monitoring and communication of the issues around COVID-19.

‘‘The Deni Rams Football Netball Club are excited about the 2021 season and are confident our club will come back strong.

‘‘This decision does not involve the Junior Development team who are involved in the Goulburn Campaspe Junior Football League. More announcements to come for our fifths.’’

In response to the Rams’ announcement, along with Tongala announcing they too would not compete, the MFNL Netball Board met with club presidents and delegates Wednesday night and officially called off all junior netball competitions.

The MFNL board will hold another meeting with club presidents and delegates to discuss the immediate future of the 2020 footy season on Monday night.

MFNL general manager Dale Norman said the recent border closure has ‘‘cast a huge doubt’’ that the season will go ahead.

‘‘We were originally going to meet earlier this week, but given recent events we put it off for a week,’’ he said.

‘‘The border closure is yet another hurdle and as has been the case this year, things continue to evolve with this pandemic.

‘‘We’ll continue to monitor things up until the meeting on Monday and will work out what we are going to do then.’’

The Pastoral Times believes that Monday’s meeting will result in an announcement of the footy season also being cancelled.

More details to follow next week.
