Deniliquin’s Edwina Hare returned from the 2011 National Pony Club Championships with two achievements to be proud of.
The then 20 year-old was named the Australian Senior Showjumping Champion after being a standout at Werribee Park.
Her Victorian team was also crowned the champion team in the senior section.
Edwina’s younger sisters Kate and Isabelle also qualified for the nationals in what was a fantastic achievement for the Hare family.
‘‘I was just so happy, I couldn’t believe it,’’ Edwina told the Pastoral Times following the 2011 event.
‘‘I ended up winning by a point overall, so I was very lucky.’’
Edwina said it was by far her biggest achievement to that time, despite her 17 years of riding and competition.
‘‘I started riding when I was about three and this was my third time at nationals.
‘‘My best result before this was about ninth overall,’’ she said.
Edwina competed in the senior showjumping section at the nationals.
Riding her horse Melon Jelly, the former Deniliquin High School student finished first in the opening event — an AM5 competition — and fourth in the three round championship.
Hundreds of pony club riders from across Australia competed in the national titles over five days.
Despite dreadful weather, things ran smoothly, although the indoor arenas were appreciated.
Every section of pony club was catered for, including dressage, showjumping, eventing and mounted games.
Although the medal awards were spread through the states, Victoria won the team title in a close fought battle.
With only 10 points separating the teams, the junior Victorian games riders’ win tipped the balance in the state’s favour.
Edwina has always credited the support of her family, particularly parents Kevin and Sara Hare, as an important ingredient to her success.
