DHS competes in five day ride

Deniliquin High School will have six first-time riders taking part in this year’s Great Victorian Bike Ride.

Those students include Marcus and Mathew Moorse, Rosie North, Olivia Manson, Sophie Strong and Zoe Holloway.

It will be the 18th time the school has participated.

The Deni High team is made up of 15 students from Year 7 to 10, and staff members Sue Laing, Alex Glowrey and Josh Perrizolo.

Mrs Laing said the team has been working hard to train for the endurance ride.

‘‘We started our training in May by just riding around town and then increased the training to three times a week, averaging a distance of 30 kilometres per ride,’’ she said.

‘‘We have also had a few long distance rides such as out to Mayrung, which was 84 kilometres,  to make sure we are all ready for it.’’

Mrs Laing said the team will be taking on a different challenge this year, competing in a five day, 348km ride.

‘‘It will will be the first time we have done the five day ride, which we decided to tackle because the ride itself is so far away,’’ she said.

‘‘We will start at Robe, in South Australia, on Saturday, November 23 and take in some of the state’s most picturesque sights before crossing the border to finish in Port Fairy on Wednesday, November 27.’’
