Council looking at Christmas contingencies

Discussions are already taking place on what Christmas might look like in Deniliquin if Coronavirus restrictions continue.

Edward River Council and the Deniliquin Rotary Club are working on a contingency plan that would allow the annual Carols by Candlelight and council’s Community Christmas Party to still be enjoyed.

Mayor Norm Brennan said while details of those discussions are not yet ready to be shared with the public, he said every option is being looked at.

And he said with 18 weeks until the festive season, there is still a chance the events can be held as normal.

‘‘Going ahead as usual will depend on restrictions at the time, especially in regards to social distancing and the limit to how many people we can have in one place,’’ Cr Brennan said.

‘‘I would like to see this event go ahead as it has always been popular within our community and an opportunity to come together and celebrate the holiday season.

‘‘We might not be able to have a traditional event, but if it can go ahead, even if it is in a different format, that will be a good outcome.

‘‘Our options will be further discussed at the next council meeting, and continually as Christmas approaches.’’
