Murray River Police District Inspector Paul Huggett said although police had an idea of who the man might be, his identity had not been confirmed.
‘‘We believe he might go under a number of surnames,’’ he said.
‘‘We believe he has been here for a period of time and appears to be itinerant.’’
Insp Huggett said police were working with the New Zealand consulate to try to identify the man.
‘‘We’re trying to locate family or next of kin or trying to identify him through DNA,’’ he said.
‘‘No-one has reported him missing and we don’t know his last movements or where he had been in the days before.
‘‘There is no evidence to show what he was doing immediately prior to ending up in the river.’’
Insp Huggett said the man’s cause of death had not been determined.
‘‘An autopsy will be done in Lidcombe in the next few days so we’ll be awaiting results from that,’’ he said.
‘‘While it doesn’t appear there is anything suspicious about the death, we don’t know so we can’t rule out foul play.
‘‘We’ll treat it as suspicious until it’s ruled otherwise.’’
