Picola hosted 16 teams and one of our teams took out best first game. Usually a fortnightly event, to make up the games lost to lockdown, there was another game at Nathalia on Monday.

Another competitive day for 2-4-2 pairs on Tuesday, November 16. Winning pair of Margaret Cooper and Carol Mathers was the only two-game winner, with best second game (after a countback) going to Alan Temple and Tracey Emery. But we would welcome players from other clubs too. Single entries by 9am on Tuesday to 0407 040 208.
Friday pennant, played under grey skies with plenty of jackets on at the start of the game, gave us a mixed result. Division 1 was a rematch of last season’s grand final when Tocumwal Golf 1 travelled to Cobram. This time it was Tocumwal with the win by the narrow margin of two shots over the new-look Cobram 1 line-up. Jenny Warfe’s rink played Leigh Hansen’s team, Marj McDonald’s team battled with Judie Harvie’s team and Carol Doherty’s team played Jill Whiteside’s team. It was a high standard of bowls on show on all rinks, but despite Cobram winning two of the three rinks, Tocumwal took home the game points.
Cobram 2 travelled to Numurkah and, with a couple of last-minute team changes, was not able to keep up the intensity required, but brought home two points for the win on Carol Mathers rink.
Saturday pennant was also played in overcast conditions.
After last week’s washout, weekend pennant bowlers were keen to hit the green and none more so than the Division 1 side who were travelling to Wunghnu for a grand final rematch. With teams now reduced to three rinks, both sides fancied themselves as being stronger than the previous year.
Greg Dunn’s rink jumped Barry Cosgrove’s four early on and managed to hold onto a handy lead throughout the entire game with some very consistent draw bowling from Kerry Baldacchino. This early jump allowed the Steve Tatnall skipped rink time to find their feet before they hit the scoreboard. When they did get going there was no stopping them, being able to run away with the rink points in a convincing rink win.
John Dixon’s rink, however, struggled to keep Peter Revell in control with the Wunghnu four taking at least one rink win from the Tigers. The Cobram division 1 side is now the only undefeated side in their division after three rounds.
Division 2 saw Cobram at home to Berrigan. It is in match-ups like this that the restructuring of Division 1 and 2 can have an impact, as the Cobram line-up has benefited from some players coming down from last year’s Division 1, while this is still Berrigan’s top side. Marj McDonald had a marathon game against Rick Bradbury’s team – they were out on the green so long that we thought they had forgotten to stop at 21 ends. It was a close scoring game until the 13th end, when Cobram scored five shots and despite Berrigan winning the next three ends, Cobram rallied for 10-shot win.
Pat Quinane took on Laurie Way’s crew and was in front for the whole day, helped by three ends where four shots were scored, finishing 13 shots up. On the third rink Colin McDonald battled with Barry Hutchison. When Cobram had five scoreless ends in the middle third of the game, it was time for Cobram to dig deep – and they did, finishing the day seven shots clear.
Division 3 had the trip to Katandra West to play their number two side, and it is always a hard-fought battle on their home carpet. But the home team only got up by one shot, with Cobram trying some new combinations. Andrew Rushby’s rink kept the pressure on Alan Bassett’s team to finish the day eight shots up. Carol Doherty just couldn’t hold out the strong finishing Mark Lawless crew, while it looked like Rodger ‘Gus’ Graham’s team had a chance when they scored a six on the 15th end, only to give away the same score on the next end to Aaron Henderson.
In Division 4 we have two sides. Cobram 4 played away to Numurkah Golf 3. The home side was too strong at the finish, winning both rinks.
Cobram 5 had a home game against Strathmerton 2. Players on both Cobram rinks gelled and supported each other, and everyone played some great bowls. After scoring six shots on their fifth end, John Taylor’s team didn’t let up for a convincing win over Michael Day. On the other rink it looked like a six-shot end to Strathmerton might spell trouble for Glenda Mann’s team, but team members all contributed to the comeback and their good win over Ryan Bury’s crew. Cobram 5 currently sits atop the Division ladder.
