The sides duelled throughout the opening half, but neither side could find the back of the net.
It did not take long in the second half for the only goal of the game to be scored with Bill Puckett picking out Cooper Sorrenti, who managed to squeeze the ball past Campbell Taylor in the City goal.
The strike was the 17-year-olds first goal in the top grade.
Roar battered down the hatches for the remainder of the match, with defenders putting their bodies on the line to prevent City from scoring.
The shots which did manage to get through, including a stray header from Cobram’s Ben Mahoney, were well dealt with by goalkeeper Lachlan McDonald.
The result continues Cobram’s solid record against the best teams in the Albury-Wodonga Football Association with the side now pinching points off four of the top five sides.
‘‘What I am pleased about is when we do face the tougher teams we do show up,’’ Puckett said after the match.
‘‘We said our first task today was to keep a clean sheet at half-time, which we did, and in the second, try and capitalise on a few chances and be more clinical which we ticked.
‘‘Cooper Sorrenti scored a great goal with a great finish inside the box and then for the remainder it was a well-organised, well-structured defensive display with everyone putting the work in.’’
Marius Williams was named player of the match by the officials and while Puckett agreed, he said the whole back line should get the credit.
‘‘Marius was top draw, (Nathan Thomas) in the middle, (Jacob Bovalina) played his best game for the seniors this season,’’ he said.
‘‘Taner (Tekin) and Hamish (Sweeny) played out of position against two quick and powerful wingers and did well and Lachie made some unbelievable saves to keep us in the game.
‘‘The back six you could argue won us the game — or kept the clean sheet which allowed us to win the game.’’
Puckett also used the post-match interview to talk up the club’s youth prospects, including match-winner Sorrenti.
‘‘He’s growing by the week, he’s a very good talent,’’ he said.
‘‘He’s one that will be in contention for the finals, he’s opened my eyes.
‘‘It’s great not just for this season but for future seasons to know we have great talent coming through and we are going to be a good force with home grown players.’’
Roar stays in six where the side was likely to remain for the rest of the season.
Cobram plays its final home match of the season against Wodonga Diamonds on Sunday, before a tough match away to Boomers in the final round of the season.
