Although a bushfire has damaged the Tumut Paper Mill, which caused Veolia to "temporarily suspend processing", Moira Shire chief executive Mark Henderson said there are alternatives.
“Household waste collection will continue as usual, including the fortnightly collection of the recycling bin,” he said.
“We are encouraging residents to wait until recycling bins are full before putting them out as commingled materials may be sent to our landfill in the short-term.
“However, council is looking to find an alternative solution to using our landfill; this is a last resort option only.”
Mr Henderson said organic waste collection remained unaffected and the service will continue as normal.
He said Moira Shire is investigating alternative arrangements with its contract with Veolia.
“Residents can continue to drop off sorted recyclables such as paper and cardboard, glass bottles and jars, and steel and aluminium based materials like tins, cans and empty aerosol containers at transfer stations around the shire for free,” he said
“Under our waste management contract, commingled recyclables are usually transported to the materials recovery facility operated by Veolia in Echuca where items like paper, cardboard, metals and hard plastics are sorted and processed for recycling.
“We will continue to keep the community informed as we work our way through this recycling interruption.”
