Benalla Gymnastic Club gets all clear on COVID-19

By Meg Saultry

Benalla Gymnastic Club has confirmed its coaches have tested negative for coronavirus after a potential close contact was identified.

Despite it being a somewhat tenuous link, head coach Nicole Briggs said the club made the precautionary decision to suspend classes last Friday to keep its members informed and safe.

The decision was made after a member's school was closed for a deep clean.

“As the head coach I took it to the committee who made the decision as a precautionary measure,” Briggs said.

“No-one has dealt with this before, so we decided to just shut it down and get me tested.”

Briggs said the local club had planned to re-open its doors if and when its coaches received the all-clear.

But as fate would have it, re-introduced stage three restrictions in regional Victoria have halted the club's best-laid plans, with classes now suspended for the remainder of Term 3.

Briggs said the club would continue to stay in contact with its members through email and would look into posting challenges to keep kids engaged.

“We tried Zoom last time, but it was quite hard with different internet connections,” she said.

“We'll just try going and keeping our kids interested until we can get back into classes.”
