Benalla Hockey ‘come and try’ day a success

By Benalla Ensign

The Benalla Hockey Club hosted a 'come and try' Hockey night on Thursday, February 20.

The event attracted more than 65 excited youngsters who took part in fun hockey games with the aim of learning the basic skills of dribbling and stealing.

Starting with a massive warm-up game of scarecrow tiggy, coaches Chris, Dave, Marty, Lee, Taree and Sarah with helpers Alex, Charlie, Jacinta, Jai, Maddie, Ollie, Noah and Warrick had all the kids “hockey ready” and zooming around with hockey sticks and balls.

Future stars: The Under-7s line up with coaches Taree and Alex.

Benalla Hockey Club president Lee Manning said games of hoctopus and rob the nest were favourites of children who had enjoyed the Hockey Roadshow at school in the past two weeks, and the Under-13s even played a modified hockey game with coach Marty.

“The Benalla Hockey Club encourages kids and adults of all ages and abilities to have fun playing hockey, with equipment provided and a great family atmosphere,” Manning said.

“The first session is free, with Hook In2 Hockey for ages five to 12 from 5 pm to 6 pm, and Fun Summer Hockey for adults and juniors from 7 pm to 6 pm, Thursday evenings at Churchill Reserve.

“It’s all about having fun, but even the youngest kids have great skills and potential.

“New kids are always welcome, with the first session free for them to try us out.”
