After the 2020 edition in Australia was postponed due to COVID-19, the 2021 tournament went ahead in the UAE due to concerns about the pandemic in India. In unfamiliar conditions, Australia broke through for their first T20 crown with a comprehensive victory over New Zealand in the final. Aaron Finch's team got better as the tournament went on, making up for a less-than-convincing start and a thumping pool loss to England. Veteran wicketkeeper Matthew Wade was the surprise hero in the semi-final win against Pakistan, before allrounder Mitchell Marsh delivered 77 not out in the decider.

Coming off an unexpected breakthrough triumph in India five years earlier, Australia's ODI World Cup defence on home soil never got going. Allan Border's team suffered a shock loss to New Zealand, despite a century from David Boon, in the opening match of the tournament. Australia's prospects were all but doomed when South Africa smashed them by nine wickets in their next game. They did enough to square the ledger at 4-4 from their eight games, but missed out on a semi-final place by one point to eventual champions Pakistan.

Despite, again, losing to New Zealand at Eden Park early in the tournament, Australia performed brilliantly to claim their fifth 50-over world cup. A 111-run annihilation of England in the opening game set the tone for Michael Clarke's team. Australia hit their second-highest ODI total when they battered 6-417 against Afghanistan. After cruising through their quarter-final against Pakistan and thumping India in the semi, Australia's most complete performance came in the decider at the MCG by taking out revenge on the Kiwis. From the moment Mitchell Starc bowled NZ captain Brendon McCullum, Australia were destined to win.
