The comment followed Gilbertson’s unanimous points win over Canberra’s Win Mon on Saturday, June 1.
Fighting at Canberra’s top function and entertainment venue, the AIS Arena, the 19-year-old’s performance was watched by an estimated 700 kickboxing fans on the 15-event Kaos 2 program.
In the three-minute, three-round bout, Gilbertson clearly outpointed his opponent.
“He fought very smart and outclinched his opponent,” proud coach Davis told the Yarrawonga Chronicle. “It was a good, solid performance.
“Blade will feature as fighter of the month in the Fight Vault magazine and is being promoted as one of Australia’s best up and coming fighters.”
A first-year apprentice plasterer with Davis, Gilbertson has won the last four of his five professional fights – all four since being coached by Davis.
Davis predicts an extremely bright future for his 170cm fighter in the 59kg division.
“He trains five or six nights every week and runs 10kms every day,” the coach said.
“He could become Australia’s best in his division.”
The coach took two other fighters to Canberra and had more success when Madison Duffy beat a most promising fighter.
In the two-minute three-round bout, 16-year-old Madison, in her first fight with Muay Thai rules, won the contest in a split points decision.
The Sacred Heart College student “fought beyond herself” to claim victory according to her coach. “Madison negated the injuries she’s copped in the lead-up to the fight and rose to the occasion,” Davis said.
Davis’s third fighter Logan Miller of Shepparton just lost, in a split points decision, also in a two-minute three-round fight.
“It was close to the fight of the night,” Davis said.
“It was a very hard, tough fight against a more experienced guy.”
The local Muay Thai Boxing Gym at Yarrawonga Rowing Club recently hosted an inner club program involving 50 fighters from Albury, Wodonga, Shepparton, Echuca and Wangaratta which attracted about 200 local onlookers throughout the Saturday.
