Rather than the traditional Boxing Day cricket match in Yarrawonga, it was an ambrose golf event at Cobram Barooga Golf Club on Saturday, February 9, with the old Yarrawonga Secondary College Red School triumphing over Sacred Heart College Blue School 3 and 2.
“The Blue School had only lost one in the 14 or 15 years we’ve been going. We changed sports and the Red School got their opportunity and just got home!” Blues captain Tom Lonergan told the Yarrawonga Chronicle.
Local cancer support group, Yarrawonga Friends in Common, was the other winner, receiving $800 from the day’s fundraising efforts.
“Yarrawonga Friends in Common sincerely thanks Tom Lonergan and his friends for their very generous donation of $800,” Friends in Common secretary Leon Porter said.
“This money will be put to very good use within our community.
“Tom organized this charity golf day. The boys made the decision to donate the money to our organization. We cannot thank them enough for their support.”
Red School’s team comprised Craig Hicks, Chris Irvine, Matt Grinter, Josh Vagg, Jarrad Whinray, Craig Whinray, Gus Browning, Drew Barnes, Matt Bourke and Steve Ramsdale.
Blue School’s side members were Tom Lonergan, Marc Lonergan, Ben Doyle, Marcus Cummins, Dean Bigger, Craig Ednie, Ed Bayles, Nick Dykes and Nick Doyle.
Best golfers for Blue School were Ed Bayles, Ben Doyle and Nick Dykes, while the Red School were well served by Craig Hicks, Drew Barnes and Chris Irvine.
There was plenty of banter and sledges during the 18-hole contest with five groups of four.
“We had a group discussion,” the 209-game Geelong premiership star said. “All of us thought of the fantastic work with the families done by Friends in Common. A lot of their work goes unheralded.
“We also thank the Cobram Barooga Golf Club for the discount price to our group, for our special cause.”
