The aim of the carp muster is to diminish carp prior to a planned restocking of native species.
The idea also came about as a way to raise some money for drought relief for farmers as well as doing something positive for the environment.
Around $300 was raised from a very successful day. Barooga supported the day well with the Laffan family driving over and catching several fish, while Norm and Lee Walkington made the long drive from Cohuna.
More than 60 people turned up for the fishing comp, which was a real buzz and it was great to see so many locals supporting the day. There were several prizes and with the help of Paul Basse at the Tungamah Hotel there were plenty to give out.
The champion of the day was young Nate Dickens, who landed a monster carp of 5 pounds, 1 ounce. Les has a beaut set of scales which he cannot convert to metric.
Nate also landed another large carp to take out the biggest carp and the highest combined weight. Fish were landed by Darran Laffan, Chloe Laffan, Tameeka Laffan, Justin Dickens (2), Nate Dickens (2), Koby Dickens, Lee Walkington, Jenny Moodie, Steve Jovanovski and Taijun Ussher.
Tom Lawrence missed a real river monster when his line snapped and his was the hard luck story of the day.
Leo President Josh Ford gave a very good speech at the end and everyone departed for home for a bit of coolness under the air conditioners. No doubt, the environment and drought ravaged farmers will benefit from such a great day.
