The Merrigum community is looking forward to an exciting summer with the development of a splash park due to start in the near future.
For more than three years, the community has worked hard to raise almost $300000 to complete the project.
Merrigum committee secretary Rachael Rowe said it was wonderful to discover the facility would become a reality after many years of planning.
‘‘It will be great for the local community not having to travel to other towns for bigger facilities,’’ Ms Rowe said.
‘‘We’re hoping to also attract outsiders into the town.’’
The project has received $200000 from Victorian Government grants, $80000 from the Greater Shepparton City Council and $10000 from local fundraising efforts.
The free splash park will be located within Judd Park on Morrissey St, with access available from the park and Merrigum Pool.
Ms Rowe said the details of the splash park were still up for discussion, however, it would include a basketball hoop and water cannons.
She said the equipment would be interchangeable with the play parts found at Aquamoves in Shepparton, allowing for changes as time goes on.
‘‘We can always keep it fresh,’’ Ms Rowe said.
Ms Rowe said the committee would be meeting with the council and builders in the coming weeks.
The splash park is due for completion in July this year.
‘‘It’s great to have something new for the community to enjoy and we’re very excited for next summer,’’ she said.
