GVHA round 9 wrap

By Tyler Maher

Round nine action in the Goulburn Valley Hockey Association was highlighted by a thrilling contest in the A-men’s division.

Shepparton Youth Club and Shepparton Strikers battled it out for supremacy on Saturday, with just one goal eventually separating the outfits at the end of a high-scoring affair.

The Strikers had their noses in front when the dust settled on the 5-4 result, with Tim Russell, Jacob Collins, Duncan Moodie, Tim Scholz and Simon Cole all finding a way to score for the men in red.

The Scorchers were given hope by goals to Matt Irwin (two), Luke Jorgensen and Addison Davis, but in the end it was not enough to defeat the ladder-leaders.

There was no contest in the A-women’s division as Echuca-Moama forfeited its clash against SYC, handing the Scorchers a 5-0 result.

The River Rats were on fire in the B-men’s division though, racking up a 9-1 win against Benalla.

It was a huge result in the top-of-the-table fixture, with Echuca-Moama’s Regan More (two goals), Nigel Berryman (two) Ryan Thomson (one) and Adam Thompson performing well in the win.

The Strikers and SYC played out a gruelling 3-3 draw in the other B-men match.

The Strikers’ Duncan Moodie fired two strikes past the goalie, while SYC’s Ryan Mackenzie matched Moodie’s efforts with two goals as well.

The River Rats claimed another strong victory in the B-women’s division, powering past Benalla 4-0.

It was a stalemate in the first half — with no goals scored — until the River Rats piled on four in quick succession, with Courtney Thompson and Chloe Kell leading the way.

A three-goal haul from Rachelle Collins lifted the Strikers to a 4-2 win against SYC.

Tayla Hayes and Hannah Keady performed well in the win, while Youth Club’s Sue Trevaskis (one goal), Taree Fletcher and Laura Phillips battled bravely.

Kyabram forfeited its match against Mooroopna, with the Cats recording a 5-0 win.

At junior level, Echuca-Moama breezed past the combined entity of SYC-Strikers-Benalla, recording a 6-3 victory to remain atop of the ladder.

Echuca-Moama’s B-women division player, Thompson, was on fire in the under-16 match — scoring three goals.

Sam Lowndes (one) and Jenna Park rounded out the better players for the River Rats, while Eric Horton, Matthew Carter and Nathan Greig (one) stood tall for the combined outfit.

In the under-14 action, the Strikers clinched a tense 3-2 victory against Echuca-Moama.

Robert Thomas was a standout for the Strikers, while Max and Emme Cole (one goal each) chipped in with great support.

And Goulburn Valley Grammar School recorded a 1-0- win against Mooroopna, with Harris Hassan and Xavier Schmedje performing well and Rhett Vaviars nailed the winning goal.

In the under-12s, Mooroopna’s Charles Cassels scored the winner in his side’s upset win against ladder-leader Strikers Red.

SYC Blue soared to a 5-4 victory against Strikers Blue, with Axel Irwin (four goals) and James Connor impressive in the win.

Benalla recorded a 4-0 win against Echuca-Moama, thanks to Noah Gillies’ three goal effort.

SYC Yellow’s Luke Grieg (four goals) and Tayah Irwin (three) starred in their 8-2 win against Euroa.

In the under-10s, Mooroopna scored a 6-1 win against the Strikers, while Benalla’s Jai Nolen and Xavier Watson netted one-goal each in their win against SYC.
