Croquet lovers rejoice, an inaugural derby of epic proportions will take place today in Shepparton with bragging rights and a newly minted trophy on the line.
Goulburn Valley Croquet Association champions Shepparton and Northern District Croquet Association premier Quarry Hill will cross mallets today at the former’s Winston St facility.
It is an initiative which has members of both clubs excited, as the victor will be able to stand tall above all others in the region — until next season at least.
‘‘We rarely see one another except for social days and we don’t actually cross swords in a team sense at all,’’ Shepparton Croquet Club vice-president John Young said.
‘‘We thought a Challenge Match would be great for bragging rights.
‘‘It should be an even battle, it will be a 10 v 10 handicap event and we’ve got a trophy for it as well.
‘‘We’ve mounted a broken hoop on a wooden (base) and we’re hoping it will become an annual event.’’
Action will take place from 10am today at Shepparton’s home facility and will continue throughout most of the afternoon.
