Bunbartha notches up century

By Tara Whitsed

A century on from when the first tennis team was formed in Bunbartha, the club will celebrate 100 years next month.

Event organiser and Bunbartha Tennis Club member Trish Moss said the first team was formed in 1919.

She said the celebrations would include the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the anniversary as well as a book launch detailing the history of the club through pictures.

‘‘Geoff Allemand and Peter Matthews have put the book together,’’ she said.

The books will be available to buy at the event.

A signing will take place at 11am followed by the official launch at 2pm.

Moss said the committee had spent the past year gathering stories from the club’s past, which will be shared at the celebration.

Fellow club member and co-organiser Bob Steen said the club would have been one of the first to form in the district.

In its prime, when the club was next door to a school, it had four junior teams, but as small schools closed the numbers died off.

While it has small numbers, the club still has Saturday and midweek teams.

The anniversary event will also include a barbecue lunch as well as fun tennis games and activities for the children.

Proceedings begin at 11am at the Bunbartha tennis courts, 10 Loch Garry Rd, Bunbartha from 11am on Saturday, March 9. RSVPs are essential to Trish Moss on 0427298288 or 58298255.
