Chris Thomas to fill in as AFL Goulburn Murray regional manager

By Lauren Bordin

AFL Goulburn Murray commissioner Chris Thomas will fill in as interim region general manager until a replacement for Martin Gleeson is found.

Gleeson finished up in the chair yesterday after five years in the role, moving on to take up a job at Cricket NSW in Canberra.

Thomas is well known in football circles across the region, having served as president of the Shepparton District Junior Football League for seven years until stepping down in 2016.

After thriving since becoming a commissioner in March this year, Thomas is ready to guide the ship as a replacement is sought.

‘‘The applications close in the next few days and it’s been advertised widely in the search to take Martin’s place,’’ Thomas said.

‘‘I’ll support the staff there because there is a terrific team there and we’re now in the finals of female football and junior football.

‘‘I was really happy about getting on the commission early this year... from a commission point of view I like getting to cover a wide region and grassroots.’’

Thomas will fulfil the role in a part-time capacity with plenty of sporting commitments already vying for his attention.

As well as working a full-time job, Thomas is the coach of Echuca’s youth girls’ side playing in a semi-final against Benalla tomorrow and serves as chairman of the Northern Country Women’s League.

Thomas acknowledged Gleeson’s work as the inaugural region general manager.

‘‘There have been positive results in the development of the Shepp juniors and the KD (Kyabram District Football League) have all been a lot better than five years ago,’’ he said.
