Dogs need to roll Redlegs to stay in hunt

By Tyler Maher

Merrigum remains an outside chance to taste Kyabram District Football League finals action, but must continue winning by big margins.

The eighth-placed Bulldogs did just that last week with a 105-point drubbing of Rushworth which boosted their percentage by almost 10 per cent, but with Girgarre (seventh) and Avenel (sixth) still more than 30 per cent ahead of them, more of the same is needed.

Longwood is the outfit in Merrigum’s sights this Saturday and the Redlegs will be looking to improve from a 100-point defeat at the hands of Murchison-Toolamba last time out.

Merrigum’s Josh Smith and Tristan Fitzsimmons combined for nine goals against the Tigers and along with Jake Ross will cause plenty of problems for the Redlegs.

Ben and Toa Tautala will look to entertain the Longwood Recreation Reserve crowd for the home side.

●Lancaster and Avenel will go toe-to-toe on Saturday with plenty on the line for both outfits.

The Wombats have two carrots dangling in front of them this round, with a victory keeping the side in the hunt for third spot, while also serving to heat up the battle for sixth — exactly what Corey Carver’s charges want if they do manage to finish third.

Chris Eddy is up to 54 goals for the season and will look to add to that tally in front of a home crowd at Lancaster Recreation Reserve, while Zac Cerrone has also been in great form.

Meanwhile, Andrew Green and Angus Durnan have been fantastic in defence for the Swans, who can almost lock in a finals berth with a strong win against the Wombats.

●Dookie is not yet a certainty to appear in the post-season either.

United sits fifth on the table with a healthy percentage, but will want to seal its finals fate with a big win against Undera on Saturday.

Mat Crooks, Shaun Monohan and Will Bagley battled hard in a big loss to Tallygaroopna last week, and the trio will look to put its best foot forward again this weekend.

The Lions fell to Stanhope by 70 points last match, but will be in the hunt for longer in this contest against Dookie.

Kaine Herbert, Zac Brian and Cody Tancred have been in top form recently.
