The soldier collapsed during a routine morning training activity.
An ambulance was called and CPR was performed while waiting for paramedics to arrive.
An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman confirmed that paramedics attended the scene, but despite their best efforts the soldier couldn’t be revived.
‘‘Paramedics were called to the incident at 7.30am,’’ the spokeswoman said.
‘‘Unfortunately a man passed away at the scene.’’
It is believed the soldier was dead before paramedics arrived.
The Department of Defence confirmed the death in a statement the next day.
‘‘Defence has notified the soldier’s family and is providing support to them during this difficult time,’’ a Defence spokesperson said.
‘‘The death of an Australian Army member, regardless of the circumstances, is a tragedy and deeply felt by the Army family and the broader Defence organisation.’’
The cause of death is currently unknown and the Department of Defence is co-operating with Victorian authorities to determine what caused the soldier to collapse.
The Department of Defence is yet to release the soldier’s name due to privacy concerns.
