Records aside, this comes with no shortage of risks and dangers.
First there is fire. The fire danger rating has been deemed ‘‘severe’’ for the region today, and ‘‘very high’’ for tomorrow and Friday as of late yesterday.
With yesterday being a declared total fire ban for the north-east, we ask residents to remain responsible, safe and alert in relation to the potential for fires to start and spread in the region.
A statement from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning yesterday explained that with north-east Victoria experiencing extreme temperatures this week, firefighters were on standby ready to respond.
The authority asks that the public stay informed and alert, urged people to ‘‘reconsider plans to visit forests and parks during this period’’ and ‘‘remain informed about the weather and current fire situation’’.
Secondly, with heatwave-like conditions this week, there is the very real risk of dehydration; Remember to drink water regularly.
Finally, it is important to keep an eye out for vulnerable members of the community in extreme heat, including those who may not have family in the area checking in regularly.
‘‘Drink plenty of water and look after those most at risk in the heat — your neighbour living alone, the elderly, the young, people with a medical condition and don’t forget your pets,’’ DELWP asks.
We hope all Sheppartonians are able to stay cool today. Please look out for each other and be careful in the heat.
