Local firefighter wins photography award

Dedicated to his cause and promoting the values of the Country Fire Authority, local man Luke Commisso was delighted to win the CFA’s 2019 National Volunteer Week Photo Competition in the amateur category.

A volunteer member of the CFA for 16 years, Mr Commisso is currently the second lieutenant at North West Mooroopna Brigade.

Combining his interests, Mr Commisso began taking photos at fire grounds very early into his volunteering career.

‘‘I used to take the camera out to jobs a lot,’’ he said.

Travelling by his side across Victoria, Mr Commisso snapped the winning photo during the 2009 Victorian Bushfires between Alexandra and Marysville.

‘‘I never thought much of that photo but a friend of mine in the CFA said it was absolutely inspiring.’’

When it came time to pick a photo for the competition, Mr Commisso said the decision took him months and even then, he only submitted the photo at the last minute before entries closed.

For him, the photo showcased involvement and teamwork, two essential qualities for all CFA members.

‘‘There is a lot involved in what we actually do and it shows this to the public,’’ Mr Commisso said.

The photo competition was organised by the CFA to capture the essence of volunteers through photos.

Entries were judged on their reflection of CFA’s values, teamwork, storytelling and creativity.

Mr Commisso said he was looking forward to taking more photos soon both on the fire ground and in other creative endeavours.

He said success in the photo competition had made him realise both the significance and the impact of the photo.
