The group donated $8000 to the hospital on Wednesday, with the money raised across two years from the annual competition.
Each year the Blokes and Boats Fishing Competition at Lake Eildon attracts about 100 men for a day of fishing and good laughs, all the while raising money for a good cause.
‘‘It’s like-minded friends getting together to have some fun and raise some money for the Shepparton Hospital and other charities, and try to catch a fish,’’ Blokes and Boats committee member Jason Ritchie said.
‘‘Initially it was started up just as a fishing comp, but then we decided to raise some money.’’
In the past seven years the event has raised more than $21500 for GV Health, with the money donated towards a different department each year.
Mr Ritchie said this year’s donation was one that hit close to home, with a number of committee members affected in some way by cancer or related diseases.
‘‘Everyone in Shepparton and everyone involved with the club through committee members have been involved with the hospital, they’ve had to use it at some stage or another throughout their lives,’’ Mr Ritchie said.
‘‘Especially oncology with having our own committee members and other members of the club affected by cancer and cancer related diseases.’’
GV Health’s nurse unit manger Linley Smith thanked the group for their donation, explaining that the new monitor would improve the hospital’s daily cancer treatment.
‘‘It means we can provide a higher level of care ... nowadays we give a lot more advanced treatments, so there’s more of a chance that people have reactions, so that means we can monitor them more closely while they’re having their treatment,’’ Ms Smith said.
‘‘It’s fantastic the community of Shepparton never ceases to amaze how generous they ... we’re lucky that we can provide treatment here for people, which means they don’t have to travel as far as they do.’’
