People invited to The Uluru Statement forum

By Ashlea Witoslawski

People are invited to The Uluru Statement from the Heart forum hosted by The University of Melbourne Department of Rural Health on Wednesday.

The event brings Thomas Mayor to Shepparton to discuss his work advocating for the ‘‘establishment of First Nations Voice enshrined in the constitution’’.

The First Nations Voice was initiated by a group of indigenous elders, academics, delegates and activists who gathered for the 2017 National Constitutional Convention to discuss ‘‘constitutional reforms to empower our people and take a rightful place in our country’’.

The gathering called for a ‘‘First Nations Voice’’ that would have the authority to speak in Parliament.

They also called for the establishment of a Makarrata Commission to lay the foundation for a treaty between federal and state governments and the First Nations.

The Uluru Statement from the Heart was endorsed by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants and continues to stand as a positive and hopeful step in the right direction.

The Uluru Statement from The Heart public event will be on Wednesday from 2pm to 3pm at 49 Graham St, Shepparton.

This is a free event and includes afternoon tea.
