Chance for Richmond fans to meet players in Shepparton

By Liz Mellino

Richmond Football Club die-hard fans can get up close and personal with their favourite players, when the boys in yellow and black head to Shepparton next month.

As part of the 2019 AFL Community Camp, AFL Goulburn Murray will play host to Richmond ahead of their JLT Match at Deakin Reserve against Melbourne Football Club on Sunday, March 3.

Players will conduct activities in the Maude St Mall on Friday, March 1, from 3.30pm to 5.30pm, with player signings, Q&A sessions, giveaways, mascot appearances and children’s activities on offer.

The club will also host an open training session on Saturday at 10am at Deakin Reserve before the Official AFL Community Camp Function held at lunch time at the Shepparton Football Netball Club rooms.

The function will include a two-course meal, player interviews, auctions and giveaways, with AFL Goulburn Murray Football development manager Mark Lambourn saying it offered fans the opportunity to dine and interact with their heroes.

‘‘The event will allow fans to participate in raffles and auctions on the day with proceeds going to the development of local football in the region,’’ he said.

‘‘There will also be a rare opportunity for fans to meet and eat a meal with their favourite players.’’

While in town players will also head to Goulburn Valley Health, AFL Goulburn Murray Football Academy, Rumbalara Football and Netball Club and Academy of Sport and Health Education.

Richmond chief executive officer Brendon Gale said the club and players were looking forward to spending time with regional fans.

‘‘The club has a strong presence in both Albury-Wodonga and Shepparton year-round with our junior multicultural and indigenous football academy and subsidiary businesses operating throughout the regions,’’ he said.

‘‘We hope to attract some great crowds to the various open training sessions, events and also our game in Shepparton; it’s always a great atmosphere when we play in regional areas.’’

Tickets to the Richmond AFL Community Camp Official Function are $70 per person and can be purchased online via www.aflgoulburnmurray.com.au/tigers-on-the-prowl or AFL Goulburn Murray Office (cash or cheque only).
