The traditional tastes of Italy will be on show in Shepparton next month, at the inaugural Homemade Wine and Salami Competition.
Hosted by Shepparton Italian Social Club, salami enthusiasts can enter family recipes to be judged for the title of Shepparton’s best salami.
Event organiser Melisha Iaria said the idea came about after seeing the success of similar competitions in neighbouring towns.
‘‘I have seen other towns do it and we have a large Italian community here in Shepparton,’’ she said.
‘‘A lot of people like to make their own salami, so we thought why not showcase that and share what Shepparton locals have to offer?’’
Along with salami, people can also enter homemade wines.
Ms Iaria said five salami judges and three wine judges would taste and compare the entries, judging on appearance, texture, aroma, colour and flavour.
‘‘All of the judging is done prior to the event with the winners announced on the night,’’ she said.
‘‘On the night we will also be running a people’s choice award, so everyone can taste the entries and vote for their favourite.’’
Ms Iaria said the night was one for the whole family and included a three-course meal, entertainment by Mick Tenace, lucky door prizes and a raffle.
While it is the first time the event has been on in Shepparton, Ms Iaria said it would not be the last, with plans to make it an annual event on the Italian Social Club calender.
‘‘The evening wouldn’t be possible without support from our sponsors Stockdale and Leggo, Europa Deli, J&S Iaria Concreting, McLardy McShane and Varapodio Estate Wines,’’ she said.
‘‘We’re looking forward to tasting some traditional family recipes and seeing some of the best homemade combinations on show.’’
