Grins and glory at games

By Tara Whitsed

Shepparton Riding for the Disabled recently hosted the Northern Region Games Day with the home team coming away as overall winners.

Shepparton RDA took on teams from Bendigo, Cobram, Deniliquin and Echuca in a range of team relay events as well as individual activity course events and a fancy dress competition.

Shepparton RDA secretary Cathy Hamilton said it was the fifth time they had hosted the event, where competitors enthusiastically received their sashes and trophies.

‘‘The fancy dress competition saw riders and horses dressed in colourful costumes,’’ Ms Hamilton said.

‘‘First prize was awarded to Lily from Deniliquin dressed as Snow Queen, riding borrowed horse Franklin from Shepparton.

‘‘Shepparton Team dressed as clowns were awarded second prize with riders, leaders and horses all wearing dress-up costumes.’’

Ms Hamilton said the activity course challenged horses and their riders.

Northern Region co-ordinator Carol Doherty from Cobram managed the event with Alby DeSimone from Shepparton handling the MC role.

‘‘We would like to thank everyone involved including Greater Shepparton City Council,’’ Mr DeSimone said.

‘‘RDA is extremely grateful for the generous patronage of the Tan Hock Chong family who sponsor all Regional RDA Games Days across the state.’’

Representatives of the family of Geoffrey Faun and John and Denise Ford attended the event, judging the fancy dress competition and awarding trophies to competitors.

RDA Victoria enables people with disabilities to experience enjoyment, challenge and a sense of achievement through participation in equestrian activities.

Shepparton RDA is hosted at the William Orr Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE Campus on Wanganui Rd, Shepparton.
