Lighten up - spring’s on the way

By Liz Mellino

With only a few weeks left of winter, it is time to start thinking about packing up the coats and pulling out the sun hats.

While we may not be able to bare our legs any time soon, it can be the perfect time to start updating the wardrobe for trans-seasonal dressing.
While the days are slowly starting to get longer and the sun is beginning to break from behind the clouds, the morning and evening chill is definitely still in full force.
To combat this, I delved into the world of trans-seasonal dressing and compiled my top tips for when spring officially hits.
Trench coats
We may not be able to ditch jackets altogether, but we can opt for a lighter alternative.
A trench coat can come in a number of lightweight materials, and is the perfect accessory to throw over any outfit.
Neutral colours such as camel or blush pink offer a touch of spring as you steer away from the classic black winter coat.
Throw on a trench coat over your weekday work wear, or with blue denim and a white singlet on the weekend, and you are good to go.
Denim is timeless and can be worn all year.
As spring hits it is time pull out the cropped jeans and lighter washed denim.
Denim that hits mid calf or above the ankle is perfect for spring, and allows you to wear some neat sandals to finish the look.
Pack away your black winter jeans and pull out a light blue wash, or even a soft pastel.
If light-coloured jeans are not your thing, why not try a khaki colour which would look great with a white or cream shirt.
And you cannot forget the trusty denim jacket, which can go over just about anything.
Lightweight scarves
Scarves do not have to be limited to winter.
While thick blanket scarves are perfect for the chillier months, a lightweight scarf is the perfect spring accessory.
A soft material in a bright funky print is an ideal way to add some colour to a gloomy day.
Remember, they do not need to be worn wrapped tightly around your neck, you can drape one over your shoulders or tie it in a simple knot in front.
Scarves are also a perfect way to add fun patterns or colours to your wardrobe without having to commit to a bold item of clothing.
Espadrilles are the perfect trans-seasonal shoe.
Most brands have released their own take on the espadrille and they are definitely a staple item you need to get your hands on.
They usually feature a sole made out of canvas or rope, making them the perfect everyday shoe.
While they can come in a classic full shoe, the style that features a cutout middle are perfect for the warmer months.
If you are unsure, stick with black or tan, otherwise if you’re feeling bold why not try a pair with an ankle strap and some gold studding?
Midi dresses
Midi dresses or skirts are the perfect way to incorporate spring pieces when the weather is still cool.
They can be worn with boots or tights when the mornings are chilly, or paired with a denim jacket or jumper to add some extra layers.
Midi-length pieces are a great alternative to wearing pants during trans-seasonal times as they still add a bit of warmth with the extra length.
Plus, you can get away with not having a tan because not too much skin is on show!
