Wickedly good show has another mystery

On the back of an incredibly successful debut season, Netflix thriller The Sinner has returned to screens — this time following the story of Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman).
Viewers were introduced to Det Ambrose in the series’ first season where he discovered the mystery behind the Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel) case.
While Biel took a step back from the screen to focus on the show’s production, Ambrose’s assistance is sought on an equally-as-complex case by family friend Detective Heather Novack (Natalie Paul), which sees his story become the focus for the second season.
By helping Novack with the case, Ambrose must return to his hometown of Keller and face his own personal demons while investigating the double-homicide of a couple by 13-year-old Julian Walker (Elisha Henig).
At first the victims are identified as his parents but things take a complicated turn when Vera Walker (Carrie Coon) shows up, claiming Julian is her son.
Viewers soon learn that Keller is also harbouring demons from its past — a long-running ‘commune’ Mosswood Grove — located just outside of the township.
All roads lead to Mosswood as Ambrose hunts down the truth and why a 13-year-old boy would murder two people.
While the second season still had that same mysterious feel as the first, viewers find themselves guessing what happened with far more clues given along the way than in the first season.
Introducing more elements of Ambrose’s life also takes away from the time spent exploring the case, which had all the elements of great viewing — a cult-like commune, a young murderer and a mysterious rock formation inside a shed.
Watching the series becomes a game of ‘guess who is connected to Mosswood’ with most of the Keller residents ending up with some ties to the commune.
While the second season did not exactly live up to the high expectations set by the first, The Sinner is still incredibly thought-provoking and enjoyable viewing.
There has been no word on whether a third season can be expected, but The Sinner should probably quit while it’s ahead.
The Sinner series two can be streamed on Netflix.
